When it comes to 3D printing, no material is more widely used than PLA. Short for polylactic acid, PLA is a bio-based, biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch and sugarcane. It is the first material most people print with, and for many users it remains the only material they ever need.
Why PLA is the world's favorite 3D printing filament
PLA's popularity is no accident. It offers a combination of user-friendliness, print quality, and visual finish that is hard to beat.
- Excellent surface finish.
- Eco-friendly credentials.
Where PLA performs best
PLA is the ideal material for visual prototypes, decorative models, figurines, architectural mockups, educational projects, and low-stress functional parts. It is widely used in cosplay props, tabletop gaming miniatures, and consumer product design. The main limitation of PLA is its relatively low heat resistance — its glass transition temperature is around 60 °C — which means it is not suitable for parts that will sit in a hot car or near a heat source.
Printing tips for reliable PLA results
For most PLA filaments on the market, the following settings produce excellent results:
Setting | Recommended value |
Nozzle temperature | 190–220 °C |
Bed temperature | 50–60 °C |
Print speed | 50–80 mm/s |
Cooling fan | 100% after the first few layers |
Retraction | 1–3 mm at 30–45 mm/s |
To avoid stringing, store PLA in a dry box or sealed bag with desiccant, and use fresh filament whenever possible.
